Causes Bad Breath?

For over 30 years, many patients at Oral Health Associates have asked how they can take proactive steps to improve their breath and ensure their breath is not foul. We understand Green Bay likes to not only look fresh, but smell fresh too. We’re going to tackle the sensitive topic of bad breath in this blog.

Things That Cause Bad Breath

  • Poor Oral Hygiene – Yes, it’s true. Brushing and flossing can dramatically influence the way your breath smells. If you do not brush and floss, bacteria in the mouth builds up to cause bad breath. By simply brushing and flossing your teeth well every day and at least twice a day, you can keep your breath smelling fresh and clean. Don’t forget to brush the tongue, as bacteria builds up there as well.
  • Certain Foods – We know that what we eat has a dramatic impact on how our breath smells the following hours. Some foods like garlic and onions contain pungent oils that can make your breath smell bad. Additionally, dairy products (e.g., milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.) can make your breath smell bad as well. After eating these foods, be sure to brush your teeth well to keep your breath fresh.
  • Health Problems – In some cases, you can smell differently when you’re sick. There are numerous health problems that can cause bad breath, including sinus infections, sore throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, diabetes, pneumonia, as well as some stomach problems and liver diseases. If you’re experiencing any other side effects besides bad breath, be sure to visit a family doctor to have your health evaluated.
  • Dry Mouth – Saliva moistens and cleanses the mouth and plays an important role in your oral ecosystem. Having a lack of saliva in the mouth can lead to bad breath. This side effect is known as dry mouth, or xerostomia. Dry mouth can be caused by medications, mouth-breathing, or from certain medical conditions. If you have dry mouth, speak with your dentist to see if there is a clear solution. There are products such as chewing gums and lozenges that help produce more saliva.
  • Infections of the Mouth – As with sickness, having sickness or infections in your mouth can have an impact on breath smell. Cavities, gum disease, and impacted teeth can all cause bad breath. This is why it’s important to take good care of your oral health by brushing and flossing well and seeing your dentist regularly.
