How Often Should You Brush Your Teeth?

When you’re looking for a Green Bay family dentist, we at Oral Health Associates strive to be your choice. With our wide selection of family dentistry and cosmetic dentistry services, we’re capable of giving you the smile of your dreams. However, the first building block of having a beautiful smile starts with a good oral hygiene regimen. When it comes to having a good oral hygiene regimen, one of the most important parts is determining the frequency of your brushing. So what’s the optimal number of times you should brush your teeth a day? We’ll be happy to tell you!

Twice Is Nice!

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day and flossing daily as well. While it’s often suggested to brush after every meal, this isn’t actually necessary; brushing twice a day is perfectly fine for maintaining great oral hygiene.

However, if you happen to be wearing braces, you’ll want to brush four times a day – once after every meal and again before bedtime. The reason for this difference is because a patient with braces has many more crevices in his or her mouth where food particles can get trapped and cause damage. This is why it’s important to make an even more committed brushing effort if you’re wearing braces.

What Can Happen If You Don’t Brush Your Teeth

While we all understand that if you didn’t brush your teeth , you’d end up with cavities, gum disease, possible tooth loss, and an assortment of other oral problems, poor oral hygiene can lead to many non-oral health issues as well. A lack of good oral hygiene can lead to the possibility of developing:

  • Higher levels of stress
  • A higher chance of a stroke
  • Respiratory diseases including pneumonia
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s
