Foods That Stain Your Teeth

Foods That Stain Your Teeth

While you’re assuredly familiar with the fact that oral hygiene has a huge long-term impact on the way that your teeth look, you may not be quite as familiar to the fact that even the foods you eat can greatly affect your teeth as well. It’s true – many foods actually contain staining properties that can cause your teeth to lose their beautiful luster over time. As your Green Bay cosmetic dentist and dental team, we at Oral Health Associates would like to share with you some of these staining foods that you should watch out for as well as how to best defend against staining.

Teeth Staining Foods

Some of the foods that are most likely to stain your teeth are as follows:

  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Red wine
  • Soda
  • Sports drinks
  • Energy drinks
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Pomegranates
  • Grapes
  • Citrus fruits
  • Tomato sauce

How to Prevent Your Teeth from Staining

While the obvious best way to prevent your teeth from being stained is to avoid the foods that we previously mentioned, we understand that many people won’t want to completely give up some of their favorite foods. Thankfully, there are still many things that you can do to help decrease the chance that those foods will end up staining your teeth. We recommend doing the following:

  • Brush Right After Eating – After you’ve eaten any foods that might stain your teeth, you should immediately brush your teeth. This will help remove the foods that are causing your teeth to be stained.
  • Rinse Your Mouth Out – If you can’t brush after eating, you should at least try to rinse your mouth out. This can lessen the effect that foods have on staining your teeth.
  • Use a Straw – If the staining foods that you consume happen to be drinks, we highly recommend using a straw. By using a straw, the drink will bypass your teeth, which will keep them from being stained.
