What To Do if You Chip a Tooth

At Oral Health Associates, our mission is to help patients throughout the Green Bay, WI area maintain healthy, beautiful smiles through quality dental care. While we focus on preventive dental treatment at our practice, sometimes, accidents happen – and if you ever chip a tooth, it’s vital to know how to react. Chipping a tooth is never fun, but by acting quickly, you can ensure the damage is minimal and restore your complete smile as quickly as possible

How to Deal with a Chipped Tooth

Whether you slip and fall, have an accident in a sports game, or chomp down a little too hard on a piece of ice, chipping a tooth is unsettling – but it’s not the end of the world. First, take precautionary measures to protect both the tooth and your mouth. Rinse the area out with water, and try taking acetaminophen if the tooth is painful. If the tooth has a sharp, jagged edge where it broke off, try covering this with a piece of dental wax or sugar-free gum to prevent it from cutting your tongue or cheek.

The next thing to do is to call our office. We’ll set you up with an appointment to repair the chipped tooth as quickly as possible. If you have to eat in the meantime, eat only soft or liquid foods, and avoid biting down on the damaged tooth as much as possible. As always, though, if you feel that you’re in serious danger or the tooth bleeds uncontrollably and doesn’t stop, head to the ER.

Often, we can repair a chipped tooth using a simple cosmetic dental procedure in just one appointment. Some more serious tooth fractures can recover multiple appointments or more extensive repair work, but repairing a chipped tooth is normally a routine procedure.
