Follow our dental emergency instructions below and seek help if necessary.

Toothache

First, clean around the sore tooth. Use warm salt water to rinse the mouth and displace any food that may be trapped around or between the teeth. In the event of facial swelling, apply a cold compress to the affected area. For temporary pain relief, it’s best to use acetaminophen. Under no circumstances should you use an aspirin for your toothache. If the toothache continues for an entire day, please contact our Green Bay dentist.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

You can apply ice to any bruised areas. If there’s bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 15 minutes, you should go to an emergency room.

Broken Braces or Wires

If part of your braces break, remove it only if it will come out easily. If it’s stuck or painful to remove, cover any protruding or irritating edges with orthodontic wax, cotton balls, or gauze. Don’t remove any wire that’s caught in the gums, cheek or tongue – see a Green Bay dentist immediately. Emergency dental attention usually isn’t required in the case of a broken appliance that’s not causing any discomfort.

Broken Tooth

Rinse the area with warm water and put a cold compress over it. Recover any of the broken tooth fragments you can and seek immediate emergency dental attention.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

Recover the tooth, making sure to handle it by the top (crown) and not the root. Rinse it, but don’t clean or handle it more than necessary. Attempt to reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place using a clean piece of cloth or gauze. If the tooth can’t be reinserted, keep it in a cup containing water or milk. Time is of the essence when it comes to saving the tooth so you’ll want to see your Green Bay dentist as soon as possible.

Possible Broken Jaw

If you receive a jaw injury that you suspect may be a broken jaw, you should tie the mouth closed with a towel or a similar object and immediately go to an emergency room.

Bleeding from a Baby Tooth Falling Out

You’ll want to fold a piece of gauze (or soft cloth) and place it firmly against the bleeding area. Bite down against the gauze for 15 minutes. If the bleeding continues, visit your dentist.

Cold or Canker Sores

You can temporarily relieve any irritations or discomfort from these canker sores with over-the-counter medication. If the sores persist, we recommend visiting your dentist.
