It is without a doubt that a healthy mouth is a happy mouth. Oral health serves as the foundation for your well being, and it’s particularly critical during your child’s development. Taking care of your child’s pearly whites goes far beyond brushing and flossing for a minty, dazzling smile. According to a review published by the American Society for Microbiology, poor oral hygiene is linked to a number of health conditions and diseases including: cardiovascular disease, pneumonia, and diabetes, among others. Not to mention, poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities, tooth decay, and a number of other issues that could be detrimental to your child’s teeth. We are here to guide your family to healthy, clean, pristine, pearly white teeth that your children will be able to carry for a lifetime.

Is My Child Too Young or Too Old for a Pediatric Dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled either as soon as their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday, Seeing a dentist is a vital step in self care at any and all ages. Our pediatric dentists are specially trained in caring for younger, developing mouths as well as the needs of adolescents and young adults.

Although pediatric dentistry typically refers to patients between a few months old and 21 years old, as a family dental practice we would love to continue caring for your child throughout their adulthood – and perhaps one day, your grandchildren, as well.

Taking Care of Your Child’s Teeth on a Daily Basis

While we’re proud to provide some of the best when it comes to children’s dentistry, you should know that going to the dentist is only half the battle. The other half lies in maintaining great daily oral hygiene. That’s why we’re glad to give you several tips when it comes to taking care of your child’s teeth outside of your visits to your Green Bay, WI kid’s dentist. We recommend abiding by these tips:

  • You should help your child with his or her brushing until the age of about seven. For effective brushing, you’ll want to brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush that’s small enough to reach everywhere in your child’s mouth. Use just a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when brushing. If you have a baby whose teeth haven’t erupted yet, you should rub the gum area with a clean cloth after each feeding.
  • You’ll want to try curbing any harmful habits your child may have. Oral habits such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, pacifier sucking, and chewing on foreign objects can lead to orthodontic problems when continued over a long period of time. By cutting these bad habits out, you’ll help your child maintain a healthy smile.
  • You should provide your child with a well-balanced and healthy diet. It’s important to limit sugary snacks as the leftover sugar in your child’s mouth will emit acids that can erode tooth enamel and cause decay. Try to replace these sugar-filled snacks in your child’s diet with healthier foods, such as cheese, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Also, drinking water is a great choice because it’s an effective way to wash any lingering acid off of your child’s teeth.
