Great oral health begins at home. Parents can help kids make brushing and flossing a regular part of every day. Your local Green Bay family and cosmetic dentists want to help your family improve their oral health with a few important techniques. Dr. Gregory Gardner, Dr. Mark Glime, and Dr. Brian Koch encourage all our patients to put the following strategies into practice.
Brushing Your Teeth
Tooth brushing is one of the most essential parts of oral hygiene. Keep these rules in mind to maximize your brushing:
- Brush at least twice a day–after breakfast and before bed. Brushing four times a day is optimal
- Brush for a full two minutes
- Brush teeth, tongue, and the roof of your mouth
- Replace toothbrushes every two months or whenever bristles start to fray and bend (whichever comes first)
- Brush in vertical, horizontal, and circular motions to clear away plaque
- Be sure to brush all surfaces of each tooth
Parents should help young children brush their teeth. Monitor older children to ensure that enough time is spent brushing.
Flossing is another important part of at-home oral care. Only use dental floss to care for your teeth, never any other type of filament. Cut a portion of floss and wrap the ends around your two index fingers, holding the wrap firmly against your thumbs if you like. Gently glide the taut length of floss down between the teeth. Be careful not to force floss against the gums. Guide the floss so it rubs the space between both teeth. Repeat until the spaces between all teeth have been cleaned.
Make Regular Dental Cleaning Appointments
Finally, make sure that every member of your family has regular appointments for cleaning and checkups. Regular family dentistry prevents calcified plaque buildup. Your dentist will also check for developing cavities and other concerns.
