The summer months are upon us, and that means trips to the swimming pool and lake, baseball, playing tag and capture the flag, and lots of other outdoor activities for kids. It is important to remember, however, that these fun, carefree pastimes can have some serious dental consequences if the right steps are not taken to ensure standard oral safety. Your local Green Bayfamily and cosmetic dentists want you and your children to know how to keep your teeth safe and healthy this summer by following these easy tips.
Swimming Pool Safety
While swimming in pools frequently, some people run into an issue called swimmer’s calculus, which is when hard, brown or yellow tartar deposits appear that stain the teeth because of pool water treatment chemicals. Usually appearing after spending six hours or more in pool water a week, it can easily be solved with cosmetic dentistry.
Many children’s dental injuries occur in and around the swimming pool, from either slipping or falling. It is important to never run around the perimeter of the pool, and always make sure to avoid the edges when jumping or diving in.
Contact Sport Safety
Whether it is basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, or some other sport, every child should wear a protective mouth guard to shield the teeth from any accidental collision or impact. Every year, mouth guards prevent over two hundred thousand injuries, and also reduce both the severity and cost of dental problems sustained from contact sports. Make sure that your child has one the next time they shoot some hoops or round the bases!
