The Importance Of Extractions

Dental Extractions are important procedures involving the removal of a tooth that has been seriously damaged, infected, or otherwise harmed. Sometimes extractions are required to prevent excessive crowding inside the mouth and to ensure that surrounding teeth remain strong and healthy.

Far from being a harmful course of treatment, an extraction can dramatically improve oral health. An extraction might be a necessary part of achieving the ultimate outcomes of dental care. In fact, extractions are often very routine procedures and may be the correct course of treatment for many different reasons, such as:

  • Disease – A severely infected tooth may need to be removed.
  • Trauma – Deeply cracked teeth are sometimes removed to prevent
    greater injury.
  • Impaction – Wisdom teeth can press against existing molars and cause patients excessive pain in the mouth and jaw.
  • Orthodontic treatment – Excessive crowding may require tooth extraction before treatment with braces or other aligners can begin.

Sometimes an extracted tooth can be replaced by our Green Bay dentist with a dental implant. This helps preserve the natural beauty of a smile.

After An Extraction

Once a tooth has been extracted, the site is immediately covered with sterile gauze. Patients can apply gentle pressure to the site to staunch bleeding. Some pain and discomfort may occur, and this can generally be managed with over the counter pain relievers. We may prescribe an antibiotic to help with healing. Ice packs can be used to relieve swelling.
