Extractions are important procedures involving the removal of a tooth that has been seriously damaged, infected, or otherwise harmed. Sometimes extractions are required to prevent excessive crowding inside the mouth and to ensure that surrounding teeth remain strong and healthy.
Far from being a harmful course of treatment, an extraction can dramatically improve oral health. An extraction might be a necessary part of achieving the ultimate outcomes of dental care. In fact, extractions are often very routine procedures and may be the correct course of treatment for many different reasons, such as:
Sometimes an extracted tooth can be replaced with a dental implant. This helps preserve the natural beauty of a smile.
Once a tooth has been extracted, the site is immediately covered with sterile gauze. Patients can apply gentle pressure to the site to staunch bleeding. Some pain and discomfort may occur, and this can generally be managed with over the counter pain relievers. We may prescribe an antibiotic to help with healing. Ice packs can be used to relieve swelling.

You may have noticed infection control has always been a top priority at our practice. Our established processes ensure you receive care that is both safe and comfortable. The COVID-19 pandemic is not the first contagious illness to have circulated our country, nor will it be the last. Over the lifetime of our practice we have successfully prevented the transmission of many infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Swine flu, H1N1, MERS, SARS in addition to our annual “flu season.” Furthermore, hepatitis in its many forms, HPV, herpes, etc. are all part of our everyday lives as your dental care team.
In addition to our standard and universal precautions we want to tell you of additional infection control procedures we have implemented. We follow the daily updates and recommendations of the American Dental Association, the CDC, and OSHA. You may notice the following changes at your next appointment:
We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you have regarding the steps we take to ensure the safety of everyone in our office. Thank you for being our patient and we look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors, and friends.
