Professional Treatment At Oral Health Associates

Seeing your Green Bay dentist regularly is about much more than white teeth. Periodontal disease is a common problem, and here at Oral Health Associates, we strive to catch this disease early. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is linked to serious conditions such as pre-term births, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Signs Of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease does not always present obvious symptoms. However, there are some common signs you can watch out for and bring up with your dentist, including:

  • Abscess: This forms when bacteria becomes trapped in a periodontal pocket.
  • Bad Breath: This can happen when plaque gets trapped in hard-to-clean areas.
  • Bleeding Gums: If this doesn’t go away, inform your dentist at your next checkup.
  • Loose Teeth: Gum disease can lead to bone loss, and this is accelerated when you grind or clench the teeth.
  • Receding Gums: When your teeth look longer, the gum could be receding, exposing teeth roots.
  • Red Or Swollen Gums: Inflammation is one of the first signs of periodontal disease.
  • Sensitivity: Exposed roots make it painful to consume hot and cold items.

Our Approach To Treatment

Our practice starts by evaluating oral hygiene and offering instructions on improving the care of a patient’s teeth. We then use hand and ultrasonic instruments for debridement, root planing or scaling, which are techniques for removing tartar, calculus, and plaque from the surface and exposed roots of the teeth. We may also include antimicrobial products or antibiotics during treatment in order to reduce the risk of surgery and to reduce the depth of any developed pockets.

Occasionally, surgery may be required when the pockets become deep and the gum tissue is particularly inflamed. If we believe your treatment should include surgery, we will discuss the procedure and our thoughts on the best course of action with you.
